Washington state regulations dictate that records showing public decisions including court papers, arrest records, marriage licenses, traffic infractions and more are open and accessible to the general public, largely because of the Washington's 1973 Public Records Act. Because of these laws, Washingtonians have access to, examine, and procure information about police arrest records, marriage certificates, court documents, and traffic transgressions, which contain titles, dates, sentences, and specifics on events which occur within the municipality. This legislation, that is generally using the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, are in place to ensure U.S. Citizens and residents of Coupeville are able to understand their protection under the law, and hold authorities and criminals responsible for their actions, promoting a free and open society for all.
