The United States put in place the Freedom of Information Act in 1966, ushering in a new era of government openness, and New Mexico followed suit by releasing their unique Inspection of Public Records Act, letting people of El Rito to acquire reports retained by their municipal administration. These laws, or rather compilation of laws, provide El Rito locals the ability to search for, report, and utilize these records, which includes specifics about those involved, when the event occured, the results associated with a municipal action, and information on what happened. People of El Rito have the ability to better understand their rights due to these laws, and the transparency available from the release of these records keeps both criminals and legislators culpable with regard to their actions, consequently resulting in a more open and free society for all
