As a result of the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, state governments implemented their own regulations concerning government record transparency, and because of Maryland’s Public Information Act, which celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2001, locals of Friendship can also enjoy transparency in their municipality. All applicable information on the many happenings of law enforcement officials, local courts, and local government are incorporated into these records, and generally are deemed public unless formally redacted. Residents of Friendship are able to better understand their rights because of these laws, and the transparency available from the release of these records helps to keep both criminals and authorities responsible with regard to their actions, consequently leading to a more open and free society for all.
